You show up for work ready to shine. It's your first day on the job and you are eager to impress your boss and learn from your seasoned colleagues. You are not sure what to expect, but you are eager to pursue your career as a security guard whose responsibility is to keep lives and property safe. It's a hefty responsibility, but your training has prepared you for this day, and now it's time to hone your skills and show them what you can do.

Missouri is a beautiful state with plenty of opportunities for security guards. There are just over 6 million people in the Show Me State, and that means that these people have plenty of neighborhoods, shopping centers, office buildings, schools, warehouses, and industrial facilities that need protected. If you are up for the job, you can find plenty of opportunities and options for protecting lives and property from harm. In fact, there are over 9,000 security jobs in St. Louis, 6,000 in Kansas City, and just over 1,000 in Springfield. And, if you are looking to get in on the ground floor of some fast growing communities and industries, take a look at Nixa, Raymore, and even St. Louis. Each of these cities are recording rapid growth rates in both population and the number of businesses opening their doors. 

The state's crime rate is pretty stable. There are roughly 4.4 violent crimes, and 29 property crimes per 1,000 residents. The violent crime rate is on par with the national average, while the property crime rate is just a few points above the median national crime rate. Your job as a security guard is to help bring these crime rates down by keeping a watchful eye over people and property so that they don't become the next statistic.   

The average salary for security guards in Missouri is $23,700 per year. This is on par with the national median of $24,000. As with all careers, the greater your experience and training, the higher the salary you can command. Salaries for experienced security guards in the state can rise to upwards of $40,000 per year. The state is expecting 12% growth within the security industry, and the sooner you start climbing the ladder, the sooner you will start bringing home the big bucks doing a job that you are good at and love doing each and every day.

Of course, there is a bonus to these fantastic salaries: The cost of living in Missouri is well below the national average. Thus, your dollar will go even farther within the state making it comparable to earning 10% more than other places. Housing, groceries, transportation, healthcare, and other expenses are less expensive in the state which means you can increase your entertainment budget a little bit to enjoy the beautiful sights and exciting activities that are located throughout the area. But, first you have to find a job.     

Some of the state's largest employers include Walmart, Boeing, Ford, Home Depot, Monsanto, UPS, and GM. Each of these companies maintain multiple facilities throughout the state and the country. Thus, finding a position with these companies can give you fantastic opportunities for career growth within the same company if you feel like relocating down the road. Of course, you can also decide to stay put and climb the ladder in Missouri, and many do because it's just a fantastic place to live with lots of great people and fabulous things to do when you're not working. If you think you're going to want to stay put, then consider searching jobs with more local employers such as the Mercy Hospital System, Schnuck Markets, True Manufacturing Company, or Anheuser-Busch. Each are fantastic employers with great reputations within the state.   

The state doesn't require security guards to be licensed, however, many of the cities in Missouri do require licensing. Thus, if you are looking for a job in St. Louis, Joplin, Kansas City, Springfield, or St. Joseph, you will want to take a look at the requirements each city has set forth. Generally speaking, you will need to pass a background check, be at least 18 years old, have a basic understanding of the law, and be able to show that you have the training required to effectively perform your duties as a security guard. Further, security guard companies within the state have their own internal requirements. Typically, they like to see that their personnel are in good health, skilled at conflict resolution, and can pay attention to the little details that might signal something is "off."  

Missouri is a humid climate. This means that the thermometer is constantly lying. The humidity makes it feel especially hot in the summer, and extremely cold in the winter. Thus, security guards working outdoors in Missouri need to take special precautions in order to ensure they don't suffer from heat stroke or frostbite while doing their rounds. In the winter months, the temperature drops into the 30's during the day, and dips into the low teens at night. In the summer, it rises into the 80's and 90's during the day, and cools off into the 60's and 70's at night. Then, there's the precipitation. It rains in the spring and summer, and snows in the fall and winter. As such, a good security guard always makes sure they have an umbrella, or a shovel at the ready for when the skies open up and begin to blanket the state.

When you are not walking your beat, the show me state has plenty of things to show you. You can head over to the Gateway Arch for a spectacular view of St. Louis and the Missouri River. You can enjoy watching the St. Louis Cardinals aim for another pennant. While you can't see the Rams play in Missouri anymore, you can still see the St. Louis Blues take to the ice. For those times when you want to get out of the city and away from the crowds, you can head into the Ozarks to do some fishing, camping, or hunting, In the summer, you might want to cool off at the Worlds of Fun Theme Park, or dip your toes in Whitewater Branson. And, speaking of Branson, it's a fun li'l city full of entertainment ranging from concerts and casinos, to theaters and restaurants.
