If by happenstance you find yourself in Hackensack, you will want to stop a moment and take a look around. What you'll discover is that you're in the middle one of the finest states in the union. It's a great place to be a security professional with plenty of opportunities and an amazing location near some of America's most desirable employers.

The largest employer in the state is Wakefern Foods located in Keasbey. They operate ShopRite, PriceRite, and The Fresh Grocer and maintain one of the largest trucking fleets in the world. That's a lot of equipment and a lot of food that they need to protect and they are always on the look out for security professionals that can keep the inventory flowing where it needs to go.

If you are looking for a little more excitement, you can always find a position working for Caesars Entertainment or Trump. They have a few casinos up in Atlantic City where they not only need someone who can protect the winnings, but also a skilled negotiator who can keep the peace when the sore loser won't leave the table.

If your dreams are flying higher than the craps table, take a look at United Airlines. They have massive operations at Newark Airport that they need to keep locked down tight. Positions with United pay well and come with some fabulous perks that make looking into it well worth your time.

New Jersey is also at the forefront of education and features some of the world's finest universities. Rutgers, Princeton, and Montclair are all located in the state and the students need someone who can keep them in line and out of trouble on their way to graduation. Who knows? You might even learn a thing or two as you listen in and audit a lecture or two in your spare time.

Fortunately, New Jersey isn't a very big state and it has a well connected public transportation system. These means you can live in some of the state's best communities and commute to work. You will love floating around Toms River and Hoboken is always inviting (plus, it's just cool to say you are from Hoboken.) You will also enjoy the enlightening atmosphere of Edison, and the grass is always greener in Fair Lawn. Each of these communities are wonderful places to put down roots and make yourself feel right at home. With friendly neighbors, good schools, and great locations, these are some of the most popular places in the state.

New Jersey's size and proximity to New York make it a little more expensive than other places in the country. While wages are increasing, you will need to come up with creative ways to stretch your budget. With a little planning and some careful budgeting, you won't have to change your lifestyle a bit. Just be ready to shop for housing, and be sure to sign up for a warehouse club membership so you can shave a few bills from your food budget every month.

Climate wise, the state is located roughly halfway between the equator and the North Pole. Coupled with its coastal locale, this exposes the state to every weather pattern under the sun. It rains in summer, snows in winter, and sleet and hail are not strangers to the state. New Jersey's highly variable weather patterns can sometimes shift rapidly which means you can have sun in the morning and snow in the afternoon.

As such, you will want to watch the weather reports closely so that you know what's blowing over the horizon. After all, there's nothing worse than getting stuck at work in shorts when there's a snowstorm blowing through. The further north you go in the state, the colder it gets. In fact, it can freeze up to 150 days a year there and along the coast, so you'll want to make sure to pack a thermos full of hot coffee or cocoa.

Licensing security professionals in the state is the responsibility of the Superintendent of the Division of State Police. Under the SORA (Security Officer Registration Act) the NJ State Police require all new security officers be registered within the state. But, don't worry, the SORA won't leave you sore. The process is practically identical to other states in that you pay a fee, fill out some paperwork, and wait a few weeks for them to give you the nod of approval.

Don't sweat the application process because police departments throughout the state are very grateful for the presence of qualified security professionals. In fact, they credit the increased presence of both police and security guards for causing the crime rates to plummet throughout the state. Homicide rates for 2015 are 71% less than last year, robberies are down by 71%, and assaults are down by 46%. Equally as impressive, burglaries are down by nearly 60% and auto thefts are down by 53%. These incredible stats are the combination of an increased police presence and greater cooperation between neighborhood leaders and security professionals. So, forget what you might have heard on TV and from Hollywood about the state being a dangerous place to live. It's simply not true and you will be delighted to find that the state is quickly becoming one of the safest places to live and work in the country.

As they say, all work and no play is no way to live your life. And, you will want to live life to its fullest while you live in New Jersey. You can drop a few bucks at the casinos in Atlantic City and roll the dice to see where they land, or you can simply stroll along the city's famous boardwalk as you whistle the tune to your favorite song by The Drifters. You might also enjoy stretching out on the shores of Cape May, or taking in the sights of the Hoboken waterfront. If you like history, you'll love visiting the Old Barracks Museum in Trenton or standing on the decks of the USS New Jersey anchored in Camden. The state has a proud military heritage and you'll love discovering all the events that have taken place in the state. And, if you have children, they'll love spending time at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark, or taking a trip into the Big Apple to see the sights and sounds of America's largest and most famous city. It's all within a short drive or train ride and you will find that your days off are filled with fun and adventure the whole family will enjoy.
