Long ago, Alaska was given the nickname “The Last Frontier.”
While it’s true that our state has many beautiful, wide-open spaces, the Alaska of today also has a strong economy, a low unemployment rate, diverse industries and a good standard of living. This is good news for job seekers in Alaska; reliable people are in high demand for many positions, especially as unarmed security guards.
Here in Anchorage, the different types of security jobs are (pretty much) endless. As the largest city in the state, and centrally located, Anchorage is the financial, trade and communication capital of Alaska. Most of the work of the State government is also handled in Anchorage, plus an even larger number of federal jobs. It probably doesn’t surprise you that all of these private and federal office complexes utilize security personnel.
It’s all about transportation in the Anchorage area. Due to its location, Anchorage is the center of transportation for The State of Alaska.
To say that there are opportunities for unarmed security guards in the transportation field in Anchorage would be an understatement – the sky’s the limit! The Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport is one of the busiest cargo airports in the world and employs about 10 percent of the local workforce.
Also associated with the airport are the three local military bases whose personnel and families make up about one-tenth of the Anchorage population.
The Alaska Railroad serves the Port of Anchorage, the city of Anchorage, the airport, and the booming summer tourism trade. The Port of Anchorage, the namesake of the city, brings in nearly 90 percent of all consumer goods used in the State.
Based here in Anchorage, tourism is the second largest industry in Alaska. There is plenty of work in this field and many different types of opportunities. However, the tourism field might not be right for everyone. It’s important to realize that unarmed security guards in the tourism industry generally need to be more “people friendly” than in other industries. In other words, if you don’t like interacting with the public a lot, tourism is probably not your best fit.
Minimum Requirements
Before applying for a position as an unarmed security guard in Alaska, you must be licensed.
This process is no big deal – not really difficult at all. It’s just a bit more paperwork than most of us like. This amount of “red tape” shouldn’t be a surprise, since we live in a state where the largest employer is government – federal, state or local!
Actually, the licensing processes and the few extra steps work in your favor. Once you are officially licensed as an unarmed security guard you’ll never lack for work.

For the right person, working as an unarmed security guard at a school or college can be a great opportunity.
The University of Alaska at Anchorage and Alaska Pacific University are just two of the educational institutions in the Anchorage area. It’s true, college kids can be a lot of work, but they are also a lot more fun than just working with adults.
When you work with young people you always have a smile on your face!
Plus, there are plenty of interesting things going on at schools that need the assistance of security personnel – sporting events, festivals, pep rallies, musicals, plays and more.
All over the State of Alaska there are opportunities for responsible unarmed security guards. Some of the big employers are Walmart/Sam’s Club, Fred Meyer, Safeway, FedEx, Home Depot, Costco, McDonalds of Alaska, Wells Fargo and Lowe’s.
There is also a long list of healthcare centers and colleges in every major population center, especially Juneau and Fairbanks, Seward, Valdez and Kodiak. The mining industry, as well as the oil and natural gas industry in Alaska are also great sources of opportunities for those looking for work as an unarmed security guard.
