As you probably already know, Delaware is small. It’s the 49th of the 50 states in size. If you had the misfortune of owning the 50 States Puzzle growing up, Delaware (along with Rhode Island) was one of those tiny pieces that always got lost! In fact, Delaware is just 96 miles long and at most 35 miles wide; it contains just three counties in total. Therefore, it may come as a surprise to you to learn that Delaware has nearly one million residents and in population ranks 45th out of the 50 states. With an unemployment rate of 5.4%, this is excellent news for folks looking for positions in Delaware, especially for unarmed security guards.
It’s important to note that in Delaware, an unarmed security guard is required to take a training class and then be licensed. Don’t be worried. This might sound terrible, but it’s not. The training won’t be difficult, just a bit boring. Plus, once you have your license, you are all set for the next two years! Only folks with a license can get these security jobs, and you will have one!
Did you know that Delaware is known as “The First State?” This is not a nickname – as the first colony to ratify the U.S. Constitution, Delaware really was the first state to join our nation. Delaware might be small, but it doesn’t wait around to see what others are thinking or doing. Delaware makes things happen. This is a good to keep in mind!
Being such a small state, it’s always been important for Delaware to draw more residents, tourists and businesses into the state, and more revenue wouldn’t hurt either. To help “make that happen” the people of Delaware created a tax-free (no sales tax) shopping state. Back in 1969, NASCAR came to the State – since then two races have been held each year on the Monster Mile for that sport alone. For those interested in other types of racing and more excitement, Delaware now boasts three racinos – race courses that also include casinos. Whether it’s a retail setting, car racing, horse racing or adjacent businesses, these areas present a number of opportunities for security work!
It’s not surprising that tourism is a big industry for this State. Delaware has quite a long and interesting history. Although Delaware is one of the original 13 Colonies under the British, before that it belonged to New Sweden (1638) and then New Netherland (1655), before being surrendered to the British in 1667. Really, you can’t turn around in Delaware without finding a building that’s on the National Historic Register, including a courthouse from 1732 that’s now a museum and a church from 1699 that’s still in use. And that’s all before the Revolutionary War! There are a number of ties to the Civil War in Delaware, including a major stop on the Underground Railroad, Mr. DuPont’s gunpowder and Fort Delaware, where Confederate Prisoners were held. In the tourism industry, security personnel are needed indoors and outdoors around historic houses, hotels, museums, gift shops, parking areas, ticket booths and more.

THE big name in the State of Delaware is E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company (DuPont). They are located in Wilmington, as is the DuPont Hospital for Children and the Nemours Foundation – all large employers. Christiana Care Health Services Inc. and St. Francis Hospital are also both located in Wilmington. Pharmaceutical company Astra Zeneca can also be found in Wilmington, along with Agilent Technologies.
The U.S. Government is actually one of the biggest employers in the State of Delaware. These government jobs aren’t in any particular sector or location, and they don’t include the military personnel at Dover AFB, which is also another big segment. The State of Delaware and local and city governments are another big group of employers. With such a small population base, the number of civil service jobs becomes a large percent of the population.
Other important employers in Delaware include the University of Delaware in Newark, MBNA Consumer Services in Wilmington, the Delaware Department of Health and Social Services in New Castle, Delaware State University in Dover and 21st Century North American Insurance Company in Wilmington. Retailers such as Walmart, May Department Stores, Home Depot, Costco, Target and Lowes are also located in Delaware and often require security personnel.
